Esoteric: Out of sight but still in the mind

A recent trip to the Natural History Museum (London) reminded me of the definition of esoteric: knowledge known only to the few. Exoteric is ‘common knowledge’. The Coelacanth was deemed by the west to be an extinct fossil fish until its discovery off the east coast of S African coast in 1938. The locals knew it existed and were fishing it. That is, the minority knew about it, the majority didn’t.

In the shorter term, I first saw the Coelacanth in the museum a few decades ago. It disappeared from view but I still knew it existed. On every visit I would try to locate it. Just last week I found it proudly displayed in the main atrium. At last, it was back on public display. (And while a thick layer of dust covered the blue whale, the dinosaur display was much improved suiting more adult, inquiring minds than their previous ‘kids playground’ show.)

Esoteric has become exoteric.

So an esoteric reflection on everything – just because we don’t have proof (know) of things doesn’t mean it is not a part of reality.

Canth thee seal what I mean?
